Ludworth Primary School values every child as an individual and provides high-quality education and care within a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment. Through an engaging curriculum, we meet the diverse needs of our children while promoting a culture of respect, kindness and responsibility. We aim for every member of our school community to feel welcomed, valued and supported, enabling children to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

We are committed to preparing children for their place in the 21st century by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to become well-rounded, responsible and successful citizens in an ever-changing world.

School Values Statement:

At Ludworth Primary School we work hard to promote respect for one another, the world around us and everyone in it. We work together to ensure that all children have an equal experience, regardless of their gender, faith, ethnicity, physical ability, social / emotional or mental health need, sexual orientation or financial status.  We support all children in becoming independent individuals of good character who show kindness and have resilience so that they can face any challenge that comes their way. We encourage children to learn together by sharing ideas, listening carefully and supporting one another. Through collaboration, children are supported to develop confidence, teamwork and communication skills that help them succeed in school and beyond. We want children to thrive in our school. We encourage children to aim for excellence in everything they do and to achieve at the highest standard they are able to.

Children and staff worked together to think about what we feel our school stands for and what we want our school to reflect. We all feel strongly that our values should be rooted in respect, and that is what is outlined above.

These values are at the heart of life at Ludworth Primary School and reflect the qualities we encourage every child to demonstrate each day. We look forward to recognising and celebrating pupils who embody these values during our weekly Celebration Assembly, highlighting their positive contributions to our school community.

This is the values display in our school entrance. It was made with the help of two former pupils who returned to school to carry out volunteering activities for their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

British Values

At Ludworth Primary School we take our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain very seriously. We actively promote democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance, helping children to understand their rights and responsibilities as they grow. Through our curriculum, assemblies and wider school experiences, we nurture confident, respectful pupils who value diversity, work well with others, and are prepared to play a positive role in their local community and beyond. 

British Values are actively promoted in the following ways:

Democracy

• Respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process

Children have the opportunity to have their voices heard through a democratically elected school council. The council meet regularly and participate in a range of decision-making activities.  In addition, annual questionnaires give pupils an opportunity to put forward their views. We feel it is important that children are able to express their views, and that they can argue and defend their point of view. Our integrated system of ensuring all children have a voice in our school prepares children very well to be the responsible, decision-making citizens of the future.

The school makes considerable efforts to ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community during which these concepts are shown, through for example, sporting events, a range of visits and use of outdoor education centres. Their strong-rooted values-based understanding gives them an excellent platform for embracing difference. Our international links and International School Status supports this.

The Rule of Law

• Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied
• Support for equality of opportunity for all

Children are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

At the centre of all we do is a restorative approach to resolve conflicts and promote positive behaviour. Restorative approach provides an underpinning ethos and philosophy for making, maintaining and repairing relationships and for fostering a sense of social responsibility and shared accountability.

Our very close work with the police through our participation in the Mini Police project, not only provides the children with an insight into the wide and varied work of the police, it also helps the children to experience first-hand why the rule of law is so important and how it is enforced. Visits from the Fire Service also support this understanding

Individual Liberty

• Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law

At Ludworth Primary School, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  We educate and provide boundaries for pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our strong anti – bullying culture and creative PSHE lessons, using our 'Happy Centred Schools' approach. 

Our restorative approach also encompasses liberty, by encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour, while appreciating their rights.

Respect and Tolerance

• Respect for, and tolerance of, different faiths religious beliefs

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an impact on themselves and on others.  All members of the school community are expected to treat each other with respect. Prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour is always challenged.

Assemblies are regularly used to address equality and diversity issues. We have welcomed a variety of visitors to lead assemblies who are from a variety of backgrounds. We also regularly use books to explore concepts such as the different ways that families can be made up, for example involving different faith groups, ethnicity or same sex parents. These books are carefully linked to our curriculum to ensure explicit teaching of these themes.
