Our Wonderful Garden

Our garden is coming aoing very nicely indeed! Children from Class 4 designed and began to build a greenhouse made of recycled bottles. It looks fantastic and we are hoping to complete it this week. Thanks to the staff of Wellfield Community School for their help!

We decided we wanted to divide our garden into different sections:

  • We are developing a Japanese style garden of reflection. We hope that this is a place where we can feel calm and peaceful and that will help us to think. One of our mums, Michelle Cockbain, has helped us to plant this garden and it is beginning to look fabulous.
  • The Council built large raised beds for us to plant fruit, vegetables and herbs in. Each class has their own raised bed and has already planted a variety of produce such as parsley, thyme, celery, leeks and strawberries. The children are very proud of their work and can't wait to sample their produce!
  • We are developing an area for wild flowers and we are hoping to encourage wildlife such as bees and butterflies to this area. Durham City Homes are donating a Bee Hotel to our school to help with this.
  • Our final area is a sensory garden. We are planting this with plants that smell wonderful and are planning to ensure that this space appeals to all of our senses.

Whenever you are in and around school, please take time to look at the work we have done so far. All of the children have been involved in one way or another. Some of our Year 6 children went to Horn's Garden Centre in Shotton with Miss Herbert to plan the whole garden. We would like to extend a massive thank you to Horn's, who helped the children to choose the plants and design the different areas of our garden. We would also like to thank Miss Herbert who has managed this project and put in many hours to ensure our children have a fantastic, inspirational garden.

This picture shows the work in progress. We will post more pictures as we get more areas of our garden completed.
